Local Health Care Providers
Finding a family doctor is very important. Immigrants should begin looking for one the moment they arrive in Canada. They can check the yellow pages in the phone book. They can also contact community service providers such as Immigrant Settlement Services-YMCA to get a list of medical centres or doctors that immigrants can call to ask if they are accepting new patients. This process may take some time, as there is usually a waiting list for doctors. While waiting, immigrants can have access to other health resources within the community such as walk-in clinics, community health centres, and hospitals.
Here is a list of resources that can guide immigrants through the process of finding good healthcare:
-Physicians & Surgeons
-Government Health Care Sites
Choosing a dentist is also important. Here is a list of resources that will help you find the right one.
The Brant County Health Unit offers a series of dental programs for kids whose families can’t afford the cost of some dental treatments.
